Spaces of representation - sculpture on the way to school
The Tbilisi Public Art Fund organized a meeting with students from Public School No. 23 in Tbilisi. The aim was to discuss the various monuments and forms of art visible throughout the city, including familiar statues from childhood, new sculptures, and urban inscriptions. The discussion covered the reasons behind the presence of these artworks, their locations, and memorable spots seen during longer journeys. The session involved comparing official and unofficial works of art, the environments in which they are created, the technical challenges of their implementation, and the varying levels of interpretability, sometimes requiring additional guidance.
In addition to exploring Tbilisi and everyday experiences, the discussion included examples of sculptures from the colonial period, examining their functions and the basis for criticism across different eras, as well as their often-contradictory contents. The conversation eventually linked these historical and spatial layers to Giorgi Khanashvili's sculpture 'Braids of Time,' created through the fund's open call and located at Saarbrucken Square near the school.
The objective of these meetings was not to focus on a specific artwork but to encourage critical discussions about contradictory contents, public art, and the city. The goal was to foster a space for dialogue where students could share and understand diverse opinions and attitudes, rather than formally evaluate the artworks.
