Tbilisi Public Art Fund is pleased to invite you to the winning proposal David Natidze, ‘Resistance’ for the open call ‘Promotion of Permanent Projects in Public Spaces, Tbilisi, Avlabari square’.

David Natidze is Belgium-based Georgian artist. His creative pursuits are closely related to and inspired by the tradition of modernist sculpture. He works mainly in natural stone, pays great attention to the essence of the material and with a minimalistic gesture, creates delicate and elegant sculpture. It is fascinating how the artist manages to simplify and abstract the familiar so that the meaning is not lost and there is room for interpretation.

For the competition announced on Avlabri Square, Natidze reflects on the history and tradition of public sculpture and offers its modern interpretation. The artwork 'Resistance' takes form as a portrait etched into elegant beige Portuguese limestone, giving the impression of emerging from a billowing fabric. Downcast, hard-to-read expression seems to be detached from the outside world, looking deeply inwards with an introspective gaze. According to the artist, the work symbolises the heroic act of resistance, celebrating dedication and the strength of character.

David Natidze (b. 1969) is a Belgium-based sculptor. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of the Fine Arts in 1994, the Faculty of Sculpture and continued his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. The source of inspiration for Natidze's works often derives from natural forms, which the artist abstracts and transforms pieces of natural stone into highly refined and delicate sculptures. His works are actively exhibited both in Georgia and Europe. He also takes on restoration projects and has restored many important monuments around Europe. Since 2008 he has been teaching at Atelier Schildershof in Schilde, Belgium.
